Make Money on eBay
There are three general categories of eBay sellers:
- Sellers offering items which they originally purchased for their own use
- Sellers offering used items which they purchased for resale
- Sellers offering new items which they purchased for resale
The first class of sellers are the same folks who hold garage sales. They are turning their household junk into dollars. They are cleaning out their garages and attics so that they can use the money to purchase new toys to stuff into their garages and attics.
The second class of sellers deal in merchandise such as antiques and collectables which they attempt to buy low and sell high. These sellers often maintain extensive inventories for their own pleasure and sell off their excess inventory.
The third class of sellers search out popular items which they can buy at a discount from the manufacturer, wholesaler, or importer and resell at a profit on eBay. These sellers have much more in common with retail stores than they do with the antique collectors described above.
The first class of eBay sellers will make money on eBay, because their effective investment is near zero. They are making money by selling items which they already own. Of course, they won't make much money on eBay, because they are selling a limited number of items.
The second class of sellers will usually make money on eBay. In general, they will make more money than the first class of sellers. However, their risks go up because they are sometimes purchasing items strictly for reale purposes. Their profitability depends strongly on how well they are able to buy the goods which they sell, and also upon the trends in which items are profitable.
The third class of eBay sellers are people who really make money on eBay. They trade in higher volumes, often using Dutch Auctions. They buy items strictly for resale, so less emotionalism is involved in their purchasing decision. Their risk are minimized because they do not hold inventories for as long as the collectors. They purchase a batch of inventory, sell it off, and then decide what item to purchase next. A seller in this category may sell DVD players one week and toaster ovens the next.
With each step up to becoming the next class of seller, the risks and the rewards go up. Each higher tier seller is able to make more money on eBay, but at the price of assuming greater risk in maintaining inventory.
A few class three sellers are able to sell items before they purchase them from the manufacturers -- but then they usually must deal with must smaller profit margins because they have effectively become factory salespeople.
